Nepal's relationship with cryptocurrency has been complex — Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) declared crypto transactions illegal in 2021, citing the Foreign Exchange Act. However, in 2023–2024 the NRB began reconsidering its position, with the government exploring a regulatory framework. As of 2026, individual crypto holding is practised widely despite NRB's earlier restrictions, and P2P trading within Nepal continues actively. NRB's position has been focused on preventing foreign remittances for crypto rather than banning domestic holding entirely.
Nepal's young, tech-savvy population has strong crypto interest driven by NEPSE volatility and a desire for global investment exposure. USDT purchased via local P2P platforms is the primary on-ramp. Mobile-first platforms are essential given Nepal's high smartphone adoption. Many Nepali crypto users also leverage crypto for remittances from the large overseas worker diaspora in Qatar, UAE and Malaysia.

Nepal's regulatory status has been evolving. The NRB declared crypto transactions illegal in 2021, but enforcement focused on formal financial institutions rather than individuals. The government began reviewing regulations in 2023. Check the latest NRB guidance — the situation continues to develop.
Local P2P platforms allow NPR-to-USDT conversion between individuals. This operates independently of formal banking channels and is the most common on-ramp for Nepali retail crypto buyers. International exchange accounts are then funded with purchased USDT.
Yes. USDT transfers from workers in Qatar, UAE and Malaysia to family members in Nepal are common. These bypass formal remittance channels and arrive instantly with lower fees. Receiving USDT via a crypto wallet address requires no bank account.
Binance and Bybit are the most widely used international exchanges among Nepali traders. Both offer mobile-first interfaces, low fees and USDT support. Local Nepali exchanges also operate P2P desks for NPR on-ramp capability.
