Platform Overview

MetaTrader 479 brokers

MetaTrader 4 (MT4) remains the world's most widely used retail forex trading platform. Developed by MetaQuotes Software, MT4 is known for its robust charting, Expert Advisors (EAs) for automated trading, and a massive ecosystem of custom indicators. Despite being released in 2005, its reliability and community support keep it dominant.

MetaTrader 565 brokers

MetaTrader 5 (MT5) is the successor to MT4, offering multi-asset trading across forex, stocks, futures, and options. It features an improved strategy tester, more timeframes, an integrated economic calendar, and a depth-of-market display. While adoption has grown steadily, many traders still prefer MT4 for its simplicity.

cTrader5 brokers

cTrader, developed by Spotware, is a popular alternative to MetaTrader platforms. It offers level-II pricing, advanced charting, cAlgo for algorithmic trading, and a clean, modern interface. cTrader is particularly favoured by ECN/STP brokers and traders who value transparent order execution.

TradingView6 brokers

TradingView has emerged as a leading web-based charting and social trading platform. Many brokers now offer direct integration, allowing traders to execute orders from TradingView's powerful charts. Its social features, Pine Script programming language, and extensive indicator library make it a favourite among technical analysts.

Proprietary1 brokers

Many large brokers develop proprietary (in-house) trading platforms tailored to their specific client base. These platforms often integrate seamlessly with the broker's services, offering unique features like built-in research, sentiment analysis, and simplified interfaces for beginner traders. Examples include eToro's platform, Plus500, and IG's web trader.

Methodology

Platform data is sourced from each broker's official website and verified during our review process. A broker is counted under every platform it supports — for example, a broker offering MT4, MT5, and cTrader appears in all three categories. Market share percentages are calculated as the number of brokers offering that platform divided by the total number of active brokers in our database.

For details on how platform quality affects our broker scoring, see our ranking methodology.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Is MT4 or MT5 better for forex trading?

MT4 remains the most popular choice for pure forex trading due to its simplicity, massive EA ecosystem, and proven reliability. MT5 is better for multi-asset trading (stocks, futures) and offers more timeframes, better backtesting, and an economic calendar. The best choice depends on your trading needs.

2

Why is cTrader gaining market share?

cTrader offers advantages over MetaTrader including level-II pricing, faster order execution, a more modern interface, and transparent order routing. It's particularly popular among ECN/STP brokers and traders who prioritise execution quality. Its cAlgo platform also provides a more modern programming environment than MQL.

3

Should I choose a broker based on platform?

Platform availability is important but shouldn't be your only criterion. Consider regulation, fees, markets, and support alongside platform choice. Many brokers offer multiple platforms, giving you flexibility. If you're attached to a specific platform (e.g., MT4 for existing EAs), filter brokers accordingly.

4

What is a proprietary trading platform?

A proprietary platform is developed in-house by the broker rather than licensed from a third party. Examples include eToro's social trading platform, Plus500's web trader, and IG's proprietary platform. They often offer unique features like integrated research and simplified interfaces but lack the ecosystem of MT4/MT5.
